Wendouree West Community Gateway - Achievers
Achievers
The Gateway Staff would like to congratulate this
months Local Achiever:
Sally Miller
Sally completed her VCE at Ballarat Secondary
College - Barkly Campus in 2003. Since leaving school, Sally has been
heavily involved with the Wendouree West Community Renewal by being an
Interviewer for the Community Survey in 2004, door knocking for the SEAV program
during 2005 and promoting health & lifestyles in Wendouree West.
At the end of October this year, Sally will coordinate "Milo Have A Go"
program. (a program to teach children all aspects of playing cricket) for
children aged 5-14 years old. The program will run for about 8 weeks.
Sally has, for the past two years, been the Coordinator for Auskick in Wendouree West and has always had a great response from the community with between 30 - 40 children participating each year.
Sally enjoys playing indoor cricket and beach volleyball and loves babysitting when she gets the opportunity. Sally is also undertaking training to become a Scout Leader for the 1st Wendouree Scout Group.
Sally is currently involved with Young Achievers - A group of young people learning how to run their own business. The group was responsible for decision making, communication, developing & selling a Lanyard with the words "Yareka - Young People Achieving" on it.
In 2006, Sally will take part in the Commonwealth Games as a Volunteer and may be working in either Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo or Ballarat during the games. Well done & congratulations.
UPDATE: Sally has recently been
chosen as the "Volunteer of the Year"
Award Recipient for 2005.

Note: What
constitutes a person to qualify as a local achiever? It was proposed that a
local achiever must have one of the following relationships with Wendouree West;
was born, lived in, participated in a club or special event in Wendouree West,
or have a previous or current association with Wendouree West (example: attended
one of the schools in the area).
Achiever
nominations are edited by Gateway staff before
they are approved for display. If a nomination has been submitted correctly, the
Gateway staff will notify you of when your nomination will appear. The person being nominated will be
contacted by the Gateway staff for their approval. An achiever will not be published without
his/her permission.
Wendouree West Community Gateway Team
Achievement: For the past year your Gateway team has been working hard
to bring the Wendouree West Community Gateway to the community as part of the
Wendouree West Community Renewal. Previous
participants in the Gateway Community Jobs Program, local community members
Lauren Sculley, Fiona Beaumont, Tammy Judd and Trevor Jones have volunteered
their time to create and research information for the Wendouree West Community
Gateway.
Working with the Gateway Coordinator Sam Gray, they have produced a Community
Web Site to be very proud of and that Wendouree West can call it's own. The
Gateway Team has also received a great deal of assistance from the Renewal Team,
Central Highlands Regional Library Corporation and the State Government
(Multimedia Victoria).
" We feel fortunate to have been given the
opportunity to be part of something that is a first for Wendouree West and a
first for Victoria."

Johanne Elizabeth Burnett (Green)
Johanne is the
fourth child of Pat & Elly Green, and they have lived in
Wendouree West for 36 years. Johanne attended Hazel Road Kindegarten in 1975,
attended Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School for seven years, then Sacred
Heart College for 4 years, Johanne completed year 11 & 12 at Ballarat Secondary
College, Wendouree Campus and was accepted into Aquinas College where she
achieved her Bachelor of Nursing in 1992, Jo spent the following year in
Boulder, Colorado, USA as a
nanny to two boy's age 10 and 18 months old. On returning home, Johanne resumed
her studies for her Welfare Certificate. and was employed at Child Protection
for 18 months,
then gained a position at the Department of Child & Family Services, Intensive
Family Services, Intake Division and currently as a Foster Care Case
Worker, Jo is also studying Psychology at the University of Ballarat. Johanne is
Married to Nick and they have a son, Thomas, who is 2 1/2 years
old.
May/June
Trevor Metz
Trevor is the youngest child of Lynette and David
Metz and has lived in Wendouree West for 33 years.
Trevor attended Hazel Road Pre School in 1974, Our Lady Help of Christians
Primary School from 1975 to 1981, St Patrick's College from 1982 to 1985 and
finally Wendouree High Technical School (now Ballarat Secondary College,
Wendouree Campus) from 1986 to 1988. While Trevor was in his final years at
school, he gained part time employment at a Service Station to help fund his
passion for MotoX like his father. He was a member of the Ballarat Rovers
Motorcycle Club for six years successfully being awarded 1x2nd place Western
Victorian Title. 2x3rd place Endurance races. 2x3rd place Interclub
Championship. Biggest Achiever Award and Best Clubman Award in 1998. Trevor
continued to work at the Service Station full time as a night shift manager upon
leaving school until 1989 when he gained employment with PGH Eureka Tiles as a
Level 4 Glaze Line Applicator, Fast Fire Kiln Operator and Loader Operator.
Trevor learned Structional Engineering before leaving PGH to pursue a career in
the Transport and Distribution Sector. He attended a 5 day Defensive Driving
Course and received his Dangerous Goods, Forklift, Loader and Heavy Articulated
Licenses.During this time, Trevor drove Interstate to Sydney, Brisbane,
and Adelaide, he has now been driving for a local Transport Company for 8 years
covering Victoria and Southern NSW. Trevor is now engaged to his long time
partner.
July/August
Faye McIntosh
Faye was born in Moe and moved to Ballarat in
1965. She came to live in Wendouree West in 1968, where she raised six children.
She has lived in Wendouree West for the last 36 years.
About 26 years ago, Faye played a major role in setting up the Wendouree West
Community House and has been a School Crossing Supervisor for the last six
years. Currently, Faye is the school crossing supervisor in Grevillea Road for
the Grevillea Park Primary School. Faye also worked at the Community Legal
Centre for 5 years and the Tenancy Information Network for 3 years.
Faye is the current Chair Person on the Board for the Wendouree West Community
House, is a member of the Residents Group, is on the School Council at Grevillea
Park Primary School and has been involved with the Wendouree West Community
Renewal since the beginning.
In the last few years, Faye has achieved her certificate for Management
training, and has completed the 'Making A Mark' Leadership Course in 2002 as
well as completing training for the Community Survey, of which she has had
extensive involvement.
Faye has 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and enjoys doing crossword
puzzles and jigsaw puzzles in her spare time.
Faye is a highly respected and much loved member of the Wendouree West
Community.
September/October
Sharanne McGennisken
Sharanne was born in Horsham and has lived in
Wendouree West for 29 years where she raised 4 children.
Sharanne has been
a volunteer at the Wendouree West Community House for the last 2 years as well
as a valued participant with the Wendouree West Community Renewal and is
currently the Secretary on the Committee for the Wendouree West Community House.
Sharanne is a graduate of the Community Jobs Program (CJP) in Administration,
has completed the leadership course, 'Making A Mark' in 2002 and has various
other achievements such as: Level 1 First Aid, Safe Food Handlers Certificate,
certificate of Management Training, certificate for Neighbourhood Renewal
Training Program, certificate 1 Planning for Employment & Training, Introduction
To Computers and has also completed a Community Survey Research Program and has
had extensive involvement with the Community Survey.
Sharanne has 2 beautiful grandchildren and enjoys sewing, cleaning and most of
all, helping others in our Community.
November/December
Lerrick Quinn
Lerrick is a member of the LEED Committee
and managers the Art Group, with his wife Dee, at the Wendouree West Community
House. Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Lerrick was a Junior Champion Speed Skater.
Over the years since then, Lerrick has had several occupations including
managing a number of motels, bowling alleys as well as a 10,000 acre cattle
property at Barham, N.S.W and a 6,000 acre deer farm in Queensland. Lerrick was
also the lead singer of a rock band in 1964/5.
From 1967-69, Lerrick was in the Army Medical Corp, 11th Field Air Ambulance in
Enoggira, QLD and worked as a theatre orderly and morgue attendant at the
Brisbane General Hospital.
Lerrick attended Art & Design school at TAFE College in Launceston, Tasmania,
for 4 years, where he Majored in Portrait Painting during the 1980's.
Lerrick is happily married to wife, Doreen (Dee), has two children and three grandchildren and has spent the last 3 years in a wheelchair as the result of an accident. His hobbies include painting and using Photoshop 6 on the computer to edit and manipulate photographs.
January/February
Arwyn Cartledge
Arwyn has lived in Wendouree West for
approximately three years and attends the Barkly Campus of Ballarat Secondary
College. She has been selected as school vice captain in Year 12.
In August/September of this year, Arwyn travelled to Finland to participate in
the World Ultimate Frisbee Championships.
In 2003, Arwyn came 3rd in the State Victorian Criterion Championships for
cycling and trains for three days a week on Lake Wendouree with Ballarat
Kayaking Club. She has also competed in several kayaking races.
In 2005, Arwyn, after completing her VCE, is hoping to study at Melbourne
University and would like to become a Secondary School teacher in one or two of
the following areas: Science, Maths, Physical Education or Drama so she is
looking into a double degree.
At present, Arwyn
is participating in The Great Victorian Bike Ride with some 8,000 other cycling
enthusiasts and we all wish her the best of luck for now and in the future.

March/April 2005
Zane Pring
Zane attended Ballarat Secondary College -
Wendouree Campus. While at school, he won an award for Literacy. Zane has one
brother and one sister and he has a love for playing Soccer where he was awarded
a certificate for "Most Goals For The Season" in 2002. Zane also likes
riding his Motor Bike.
Currently, Zane is working full time assisting with the housing upgrades by
doing painting and renovating the shops in Violet Grove.
