| 10 Rules Of Genealogy |

1. ALWAYS work backwards from the known (yourself) to the unknown (forebears) 2. NEVER believe everything on a Birth, Death or Marriage certificate 3. NEVER completely trust the spelling of surnames, place names etc. 4. ALWAYS check surname variants when researching 5. ALWAYS aim to have at least 2 separate sources of proof for each event 6. REMEMBER that everything is only speculation until verified 7. ALWAYS photocopy certificates and important documents and leave the originals in a safe place 8. NEVER carry original documents around with you 9. DO join at least one Family History Group, Genealogical Society or Historical Society 10. SHARE your information and documentation - copies only - with others researching similar lines |

Ballarat and District Genealogical Society house their materials in the
Australiana Research Room and maintain a large microfiche collection of
relevant family history resources in addition to books and newsletters useful in
tracing your family tree. A volunteer from the Society is usually in attendance
to help with genealogy research. Items held in microfiche/microfilm format include: Birth, Death and Marriage Indexes, Indexes to Immigration and Shipping, Probate Index Victoria, 1841-1922, Victorian Crown Grantees Index Pt 1 1838+, Local Cemetery Registers and Transcriptions, and some other Victorian Regions, Local Hospital Indexes to Admissions, Local Rate and Electoral Rolls, School Registers, and Post Office Directories of Victoria. Other useful resources are the street directories for the Ballarat area ranging in date from 1853-1907. |
